Love Like Water

Water. It is something that we all know we need. We hear phrases that remind us of how much we should intake each day and see all sorts of facts that tell us the consequences of dehydration. We preform daily tasks, such as laundry and dishes, without a second thought. We simply walk to the sink, turn the knob, and instantly receive water. It is an average part of daily life.

Here in Nicaragua, it is not that simple. Right now, we are on day four of no running water. We have showered in a (semi) clean river, brushed our teeth with our water bottles, and prayed that none of us needed to use the bathroom. This country has not seen more than a few drops of rain in six long months, so as to when the the water will come back on, we have no clue. Another example: about a week ago, we hiked 11 miles up the side of a volcano – we ran out of water on mile 5. For six excruciating miles, we trekked in 96 degree heat with absolutely no relief. The end results were dangerously high heart rates, extreme fatigue, and even a hospitalization due to the effects of dehydration. With all of that being said, we are learning in a very real sense just how crucial water is to our lives.

Maverick City Music released a song titled Closer, which says, “I need Your love like I need water.” To any run-of-the-mill American, that is nothing more than just a good lyric. We all know that it is true, but it is hard to comprehend just how powerful that metaphor really is until you have been truly desperate for even just a sip. Water is such a dire need that is so easy to overlook – similar to God’s love.

Without the love of God, we have no hope. There is no plan or purpose for our life. We are simply existing with no direction. If God did not love you, why would He create you, especially with purpose? Without the love of God, there would be no grace. The weight of our sins would be stuck on us forever with no relief. Without the love of God, we have no salvation. Why would a non-benevolent God care enough to give over His child to a cruel and unforgiving world, knowing the pain of the cross? WE NEED GOD’S LOVE LIKE WE NEED WATER – we are nothing without it.

God, thank You for graciously offering us the entirety of Your heart. Your love is so precious and so valuable, help us never to overlook the blessing that it is. Thank you for every person reading this right now and give them whatever peace that they are needing in their life. I ask that you continue to show us Your love, even if it is in not-so-ideal conditions, because sometimes we see Your effects most in times of desperation. Be with my squad, as we are having continuous medical issues. Help us to heal and to remember why we are here, for Your glory and Your glory alone. I love You, amen.
